People First Society regularly
organises social projects both in the UK and abroad to help
implement the theories we have learnt and give something back
to society. As with our other activities, these projects focus
not only on helping the project beneficiaries through the
stated aims of the project, for example by teaching indigenous
people to build efficient cookers in Mexico or by providing
new nursery buildings in Kenya and holiday projects for inner
city children in the UK, but on helping each person to develop
themselves.
Each person living in poverty not only needs to survive
to the end of each day, but to develop confidence and to regain
their dignity to enable them to make real informed decisions
and gain control of their lives and circumstance and to make
the lives of those around them easier too. It is also the
same with us as society members: how can we create that ripple
effect around us? It is amazing that whilst we go to help,
the people who we benefit can really change us too, granting
us new perspectives into the world and people around us.

International Social Projects
In conjunction with T-placements and indigenous NGOs, People First
offers students the possibility to take part in social projects
all around the world. These opportunities are primarily to make
a difference to those helped by each project, but they also give
students a context within which they can meet new people, see other
countries and experience different cultures.
Please select a country from the list to see more about the associated
project. You can also go here to
learn more about our National Projects in the UK and surrounds.

Poland
July 2001 saw the first visit to London by Polish students
on an exchange with People First members. Tales of Copernicus,
brown bread and vodka were exchanged for the lowdown on the
Tudors, tours of the V&A and beer. It was a great opportunity
to make new friends and learn from each other. Since then
the exchange has become an annual event, proving itself to
be invaluable for all those taking part.

Kenya
People First has been to Kenya three times now, each time
working with the Kianda Foundation, an educational charity
and NGO based in Nairobi, with projects also in Central and
Rift Valley Provinces. The most recent project involved helping
to create nurseries for young children in Central Province,
near Limuru, in an area dominated by tea plantations. Girls
from the People First and Fast Forward society in Glasgow
worked with University of Nairobi students.

Lebanon
Since 1998 Centre Litani has been holding summer activities
for children in north Lebanon. University students from Beirut,
Baabda and several other regions have volunteered to co-ordinate
the various activitites. The purpose of this project is for
the personal, social and cultural development of both the
volunteers and the children in the villages, and to offer
young people a profitable way of spending their summer holidays.
